Back to Canyon Market, though...When I was a kid my parents would throw us four kids in the car and make the two-hour drive down the coast to Santa Barbara from small-town San Luis Obispo to visit my dad's widowed aunt. She lived well in a beautiful apartment just a short walk from a gorgeous little gourmet grocery, the likes of which I'd never seen.

Urban Edge is proud to introduce our '08 San Francisco Bay Pinot Gris.

The Urban Edge product offering increases now to three distinctive wines.

This fresh, crisp, medium bodied mineral-and-citrus muse will grow on you and give you yet another reason to have our '07 Russian River Viognier nearby for comparison. You'll be cooking for and with these wines in simple but distinctly different ways.

Urban Edge Pouring at BioFuel Oasis Event

Urban Edge wine is powered partially by biodiesel. No kidding.

We personally deliver a lot of wine, it helps to keep costs down for our local customers, as shipping directly from the winery, while convenient in some cases, is a little pricey.

We make our deliveries in an '05 Jeep Liberty outfitted with a cool Mercedes diesel engine, giving us the flexibility to burn biodiesel from recycled vegetable oil sources.

So we're quite pleased to be pouring Urban Edge wines this coming Sunday, February 1st, at the new BioFuel Oasis facility at 1441 Ashby Avenue in Berkeley. Come see us and support the next step in local alternative fuel supply! We'll be there from 5pm to 8pm.

In our first podcast we briefly compare the very different challenges of small lot vs. large lot winemaking and identify a distinct advantage of bringing wine grapes into the City to make our wine.

Our goal with the podcasts is to keep them short and sweet (about 3 minutes) but to focus on our approach to winemaking and how that offers the opportunity to produce very distinctive wines.

A Shared Identity

Google-search 'urban edge' and you'll give up long before finding 'urban edge wine' on page 20.

Instead you're more likely to find the organization which employs some of the nice people I met last Friday. They plan, develop, and manage low-income housing in the Boston metro area and were in town here in San Francisco last week for a conference.

We met down at the winery and I got to learn more about their work and we got to share a taste of our just-released Urban Edge 2007 Viognier made with grapes from Catie's Corner Vineyard in the Russian River valley.

It's nice to share a name with an organization which does such important work. We're proud to say they'll be serving some Urban Edge wine at their upcoming annual meeting.

Our '07 Wines

What an interesting time for Urban Edge wines. Our attention seems evenly distributed at the moment amongst past, present, and future wines.

The past:

Just over four cases of our 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir remain in inventory at the Urban Edge Store available for sale. These grapes weren't available to us for our '07 production, so when it's gone it's really gone. Help secure it as a memorable wine by getting some for your cellar now. And remember we've got those cute half-bottles.

The present:

25 cases of our '07 Catie's Corner Viognier were bottled just a couple of weeks ago, so our first '07 release is coming soon. Can't wait to get this to those of you who loved the '06 version of this wine. This year's model is a great example of the pleasure of small-lot, single vineyard wines. We ran a little cooler primary fermentation, discouraged and interrupted the malolactic fermentation, and got the cool-weather hang time for the grapes. The result is a wine that's got most of last year's body, fantastic aromatics and a crisp, tangy finish.

Also coming: in September, our '07 Pinot Noir, 50 cases from a single vineyard in Anderson Valley, and later (much later), 25 cases of a Napa Valley cabernet!

The future:

We're busy making plans for our '08 production.

Here at the Urban Edge Web Store we've sold our last available 750 mL bottle of the Catie's Corner Vineyard Viognier from the Russian River valley.

Urban Edge reaches Coast!

If you're livin' on the SF Bay penninsula or in large parts of the east and south bay, you're quickest fix is heading to 'the Coast'.

They're now carrying our Urban Edge 2006 Pennacchio Vineyard Pinot Noir.

Planning an outing to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market? Stop by Wine and try our delicious Pinot Noir. One of the ground level, street-facing retail spaces at Two Embarcadero, Wine's an easy stroll from the Ferry Plaza, and easy to find.

Brilliant Benefit

This happy crowd came together at a 'tip-off' event for the San Francisco Rumble, the new ABA franchise which starts its pro-basketball schedule next week.

We poured Urban Edge wines and got to hang out in the cool open-air event room at Jack Falstaff restaurant on the corner of 2nd and Brannan.

Urban Edge wines and Happy People. Cause and Effect? Probably just coincidence...

Urban Edge at Wine

Let's say you've taken BART into the City to check out the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Saturday morning. Unbeknownst, you're tantalizingly close to the Urban Edge.

Just a couple of blocks from the Embarcadero BART station, facing Front Street and occupying one of the Embarcadero Two retail spaces, you'll find our 2006 Russian River Viognier at Wine. It's an easy stroll from the Ferry Plaza.

We're thrilled to be in there. Go eat some cheese and drink some wine and then take BART home and promise yourselves you'll get out more.

If you're driving in the City, you can pop into the Embarcadero One parking garage and get your parking ticket validated at Wine and pay hardly anything to park. Driving directions are here.

One last note: the BART map doesn't label Front St. On that map, look for Fremont street running from the south into Market; north of Market, Fremont becomes Front.

Emily Payne, who does the product photography for the Urban Edge web store, introduced me to the friendly people at IPE Productions, and one thing led to another, so I'm pouring Urban Edge wines at their upcoming event.

It's a benefit for the Peace Hoops project, which runs athletic programs for teenage boys and girls living in and near public housing neighborhoods in San Francisco.

So mark your calendars: Wednesday, Oct 17th, 5:30-8:30

Please Note: My complimentary pouring is scheduled only for the first hour and a half, so get there before 7pm!

Worried about driving/parking hassles? Take BART to Embarcadero, transfer to MUNI T light rail, get off at the ballpark and walk two blocks up 2nd St. Or take Caltrain to 4th and Townsend for about the same-length walk. Relax!

pour Pinot pour Viognier pour Both

Urban Edge wines were poured 10 days ago on a Friday evening at Canyon Market in San Francisco and more recently Thursday night at Crushpad for a meeting of the Commercial Finance Association. We're grateful to the movers and shakers in both places for the opportunities.

We're witnessing plenty of enthusiasm for both wines, and are amused (and confused) when tasters indicate a clear favorite. We aren't really at liberty to declare one, and wish to report that our favorite is the one most recently tasted.

But then the memories begin to collide, fade, flow, and combine, blending food and company, and against our will a favorite begins to emerge.

Time to taste again!

With the recent release of the 2006 Sonoma Coast Pennacchio Vineyard Pinot Noir (that's a mouthful) we've done some reconfiguration of our product setup at the web store.

We admit the name 'Try-Pack' is a little misleading, because until you see it spelled you might be inclined to think you're getting 3 of something. But there's no deceit in our intent: to offer you both wines in either the small or regular sized bottle at a price cheaper than you can get either one.

So when buying less than six bottles, try Try-Packs and you'll get the Edgiest deal.

Pinot Noir Release

The 2006 Sonoma Coast, Pennacchio Vineyard Pinot Noir (that's a mouthful) is now availalble from the web store.

Nice thing about a blog? It's a little freer format than the website, as an blog-author you get the feeling you're talking to an interested subset of the people who might stumble on your website.

So it's probably a good place to mention that if you know me, and you live in or around the Bay Area, I'll deliver wine to you. It will save you shipping costs, and I'd love to see you and hear what you think of the wine.

If that's what you want to do, first go to the web store and familiarize yourself with the products, figure out what you want, but then instead of placing an order, call me or drop me an email. Then I'll set up the order, pick it up at the winery, and make arrangements with you to deliver it or have you pick it up.

Only caveat- I need a check made out to Urban Edge Wine, it is the requrement for the winery to clear the order with my account.

The Pinot is great! I'm very proud of it.

Pinot Noir Bottling

Tomorrow morning we're bottling our 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. By Labor Day you'll find it next to the 2006 Russian River Valley Viognier on the Urban Edge Web Store

Bottling is exciting. The wine meets the label for the first time. If magic is going to happen, it happens here first! The equipment whirs, the bottles march first thru the filler and then the labeler, we feed the line with empty bottles and pack cases at the end of the line.

The first bottle off the line is special. It will go this year (and I hope every year) to our friends at Myelin Repair Foundation.

If you live anwhere just south, west, north, or east of Twin Peaks in San Francisco, you're just a hop and a skip from Glen Park, one of our favorite neighborhoods in the City. Great place to park-and-ride BART downtown or over to the East Bay, or to SFO!; when you get back, grab a civilized meal at Chenery Park or La Corneta.

And now, just across the street from La Corneta, in the same new building that houses (or will house) the Glen Park branch of the SF Public Library, you'll find an awesome little gourmet grocery called Canyon Market.
